Meanwhile, we made a thread about the People’s IPO and where to get it. Give it a look here

Mama Nkechi has a daughter in the Philippines. Whenever she gets paid for work, like millions of immigrants abroad, she sends money back home.
She has used multiple apps and platforms over the years, from Western Union/Moneygram to P2P vendors on WhatsApp/Telegram, to Remitly/WorldRemit/Transfergo/Flutterwave Send, Settley Send, and in 2026, she finally settled on using multiple crypto platforms to execute this transfer cheaper and faster.
The most important thing here is that her mom gets the transaction completion notification in her OPay account. As far as Mama Nkechi is concerned, that is the entire product.
Every stablecoin-related deck and ad you have seen focuses on Mama Nkechi, yet she does not know what Tether is.
I love stablecoins. When crypto companies send me those surveys asking how often I use them, I put down multiple times a day, and that is the truth. By the time you finish this article, my personal agent may have renewed a subscription for me, or purchased more compute for yet another pet project of mine, or worse still, make another loss-making trade on FOMO.
I do not recall any of us who use instant payment rails daily having to issue an “I love payments” or “I love NIBSS/Pix/UPI/Blik/Multibanco” disclaimer.
What I cannot stand these days is the noise. So yes, maybe we should pace the frontier.
At the next stablecoin conference you attend, someone is going to get on stage to explain that any bank without a stablecoin strategy by Q4 is heading to obsolescence, and that would be a lie, unfortunately.
By the time you are done reading this article, another stablecoin startup in New York will raise money with the goal of killing SWIFT and correspondent banking as we know it.
I used to spend time trying to reason with these folks, but it seems statements like these help close the round, and this is why we need to talk about marketing.
It is important to note that SWIFT does not move money - it sends messages across banking networks; therefore, comparing a settlement token, which represents real money, to a messaging network is an apples-to-oranges comparison. Especially when the biggest problem in the stablecoin sandwich today is the off-ramp problem: AKA, how do you securely ensure Mama Nkechi receives money in her OPay (or its equivalent) in 200+ countries.
Stablecoins make the money movement leg of the Stablecoin sandwich nearly free, but that leg is only half the story, as Cash-out, KYC, fraud controls, local support and distribution all cost money.
The USDC I send to my friends in Brazil is nearly useless until they find a way to turn it into BRL. However, if I make that same payment from Wise/Revolut, I will be charged 0.5% with little to no stress, and the money lands in Henrique’s Nubank account.
In the past, all Flutterwave needed to enable cross-border money movement was a direct/indirect integration to SWIFT, local banking networks, and bespoke treasury services. Today, they have to integrate with multiple chains(X thread) and stablecoin issuers to move money properly across the continent.
Fixing this creates the problem of bridging/orchestration, by the way, with this image being the best representation of how we have become prisoners of our own making here
We are heading to a world where multiple issuers hold balances with each other, with value moving through intermediaries who take a turn, and a coordination layer so everyone can see where the transaction is.
AKA reinventing correspondent banking with nostro and vostro accounts from scratch. But this time, without consumer protection because it’s “cheaper, faster, better”
SWIFT exists because 11,000 institutions need to talk to each other across the world in multiple time zones and different banking hours. The famed T+3 delay is that of human coordination, not of technology, but hey, let’s invent yet another monetary standard to rule them all in Open USD
SWIFT, for all its flaws, works for Mama Nkechi, while the stablecoin ecosystem today has features that are only bearable by insiders, despite all its promises.
There is no chargeback protection or recall/refund mechanisms. If I send to the wrong address, the money is gone; send on Tron to a wallet expecting Solana, and it is also gone.
None of it is intuitive either; that is why startups and companies are building abstraction layers to keep this complexity away from the billions of people in the world who already use intuitively designed local payment systems.
Seed phrases, network selection, gas, an address of 42 characters, etc cannot compete with a 10-digit NUBAN system which verifies the recipient’s name and completes the transaction at 2 a.m. on a public holiday.
Pacing the Frontier with real Numbers
The flagship use cases for stablecoins are still remittances, payments and cross-border money movement
Between McKinsey and Artemis, the real volume of payments across all stablecoin networks was $390 billion, and not the $35 trillion of trading/bot/ activity reported on all decks. That means only about 1% of total on-chain volume is for payments; better yet, 0.02% of global payments volume.
Of that number, $226 billion was B2B, growing 733% year on year, whereas payroll and remittances together came to $90 billion, which is roughly 1% of the $1.2 trillion remittance market
In comparison, JP Morgan moves around $10 trillion a day, and SWIFT carries instructions worth roughly $5 trillion a day across its network.
The no-brainer use case for stablecoins on everyone’s deck and marketing material hasn’t gained adoption, as only businesses use them for economic and treasury management advantages. Six years and counting of trying to bring normies on-chain, and it’s still the same crypto people talking loudly over each other and fighting on-chain turf wars.
The traditional players are now done sitting on the sidelines and listening to the hype. They have started entering the space with real use cases and much-needed abstractions.
As cross-border money movement continues to evolve, people will be loyal to systems that can provide cheaper, faster, less complex, and more efficient ways of moving money. Conventional wisdom says the answer to all these may be stablecoins, but in a world where everyone operates on defaults, the established players still have the advantage.
The popular remittance narrative hurts stablecoins more than it helps them, because it stakes the future of the technology on the one use case it performs worst.
The $226 billion of B2B payments growing at 733% is better evidence. Providing treasury efficiencies by eliminating prefunding, and enabling a CFO in Nairobi to pay a supplier in Guangzhou outside of the traditional correspondent bank system is the right kind of hype we should get behind.
Mama Nkechi just wants money in her OPay; the exporter in China just wants their money as fast as possible before releasing the goods.
Every other thing is just plain hype.
